Ray & I rode our bikes from the Florida/Alabama line Saturday morning at 6:30am down to Lulu's (14 mile ride) for a 7:30 am foot race, the Hot to Trot 5K. Of course we were late to the race as usual. By the time we finished registering and taking off our biking shoes, gloves, helmets, and got our running shoes on, we heard the starting gun go off. We ran to the starting line which was about 1/4 of a mile away only to see the last runners of the race another 1/4 of a mile away. At this point we were a good 5-10 minutes behind the racers. Ray sprinted to catch up while I ran only to the back of the pack then slowed down to get my heart rate under control, then started running again. As we passed people, they were looking at us like "Where did ya'll come from?" Even with the delay in the starting (and a 14 mile "warm-up ride) Ray turned in a really respectable time. The only thing respectable about my time was that I did it and finished. We hung out at the after party back at Lulu's, ate some watermelon and refilled our water bottles, then got out of our running shoes, and back into our biking gear. The looks on people's faces was priceless as they asked realized we had thrown a 28 mile bike ride onto our 5K race. The city of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach finished their biking trails and we rode those back about half of the way. Sunday morning ray got up and rode 40 miles with a group. He's pretty hard core!Saturday, June 28, 2008
